Ramen Takumi - I Really Wanted to Like You This Time, But Couldn't

Ramen Takumi used to be one of my favorite go-to spots for a good bowl of ramen until my recent visit last year.

I was told by my sister that Ramen Takumi moved to a new and bigger location, so one chilly Saturday evening - Will, three of our friends, and I popped in for a visit and to have their ramen for dinner.

It's great that the new location is on a corner because it will attract a lot more customers and it's close to NYU, so a lot of students would be coming here. The space is a lot bigger and roomier for sure. There's a lot more tables and seating area than the original location. However, the vibe didn't feel as cozy as the original location. While we were making our way to our table, there was this heavy deep-fried, artery-clogging scent lingering in the restaurant - what a turn off! It made my hair stink.

The menu expanded. There's a lot more options for appetizers and they even have sushi now. We all ordered a ramen set that came with a small plate of gyoza. They have three types of gyoza: shrimp, pork, and vegeterian.

Gyoza
Will and I ordered the pork and vegeterian gyozas. I liked the pork gyoza more than the vegeterian one, because the vegeterian one was bland whereas the pork in the pork gyoza was seasoned just right and the pork gyoza is tastier.

Shio Ramen
I ordered the Shio Ramen which was just a standard ramen. My ramen was mediocre, didn't really "wow" me liked it used to. It didn't feel or taste as good as it used to be. Although, there was one thing that did impress me - the egg was done perfectly with a slightly runny yolk.

Curry Ramen
Will ordered the Curry Ramen and it was great! Very flavorful curry aroma and the best part is that it wasn't spicy at all, but it wasn't as great as it used to be. In my opinion, it felt there was a missing touch to it, but can't quite put my finger on it.

So the experience at Ramen Takumi wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The food felt like it lacked just a tad bit of flavor and heart in the food. We weren't "wow'ed" like we used to be. I don't know if we'll  be back since I wasn't too fond of my ramen and because of that deep-fried, disgusting scent in the air. They definitely need to improve their ventilation system.
